A privately owned woodland in Humbie about 10 minutes from Airhouse. Follow signs to the beautiful church and park just past it near a small bridge. Walk over the bridge and up the little path in front of you ( it can be a bit over grown in high summer). Within the wood there are a number of unmarked paths to wander along and a wee burn to explore.
Afterwards head back to Humbie and visit the lovely Humbie Hub for a selection of homemade cakes, great coffee and lovely locally made gifts and produce.
Turn off the A68 just after the roundabout to Melrose and follow the signs. Park behind the converted steading which also houses the lovely cosy cafe. Resist the urge to stop for coffee, and follow one of the marked trails through ancient woodland to the River Tweed and back again. These are mainly short, easy to complete walks.
If you are in luck, the Old Melrose Tea Rooms will still have some of their delicious Chocolate Brownie.
The first community woodland ever in the UK. It is a lovely mixture of old and new woodland with a small meadow and pond area. There is a shelter, fire pit area and even a composting toilet. There are marked trails through the small woods which made for a lovely amble on a bright day.
Tim Stead, the famous wood sculptor who lived nearby in Blanslie, was involved in setting up the woodland as a community space and his grave can also be spotted. There are also a number of wood sculptures to be seen. The last Sunday of every month green woodworkers gather in a shelter to create pieces. After your amble head to Stow a couple of miles down the road to the Cloud cafe andGallery for scones and coffee. The post-office next door also sells locally crafted beer from the new Stow brewery. Yum - a good day all round!
Wonderful walks around the estate of varying lengths and difficulty. There is also a great shop full of new and innovative designers, not to mention a great cafe. However, it does get extremely busy at weekends and during school holidays so best to pick mid week if you can.
