We are having a peep at things to do when the weather is cold, wet or even snowy. The first one is Butterfly World and as well as being fascinating, it is lovely and warm inside.
Butterfly World is situated at Dobbies Garden Centre, near Dalkeith. It is open all year round and it is lovely and warm, especially on a cold day! Don't take too many coats inside with you as it is tropical in parts. If they are not too busy, the reception will hold some coats but car parking is close by.
Once you enter, there are butterflies flying everywhere - all different varieties. There are lots of other things hidden away, such as turtles, tortoises, different species of fish, Koi Carp and lots more. There is a section with insects and reptiles and an animal handling area. We had a chance to handle a Royal Python on our visit.
It is the sort of place you can keep wandering around and see different things. There could be a number of Bantams around your feet, with their chicks and if you wear red apparently lots of butterflies are likely to land on you!
There is full disabled access and a small shop with lots of interesting books on Butterflies, Reptiles, Insects and Nature in general. There is no cafe but you could pop over to Dobbies Garden Centre and try their cafe/restaurant.
Once you have purchased entry tickets you can come and go throughout the day as you please.
Airhouses is more than an award-winning holiday escape — it’s an experience you will never forget. Explore woodland walks, hiking trails and the peaceful village of Oxton (plus Edinburgh is less than an hour away). And don’t forget to say hello to our friendly animal family of alpacas, goats, donkeys, pigs, Shetland ponies and more.
