We have stretches of coast great for windy winter rambles and wildlife spotting and beaches and seaside towns that become vibrant,bustling, creative spaces in the summer months.
One of the nearest beaches is at Yellowcraigs in East Lothian. This is a sandy beach popular with families. There is a nature trail and a network of foothpaths. The water quality is excellent and the beach has a Green Coast Award and is Marine Conservation Society Recommended. From Yellowcraigs, there are spectacular views of the 1885 lighthouse on Fidra Island which was the inspiration for Robert Louis Setevenson's famous tale "Treasure Island". The network of footpaths go through sheltered woodlands and extensive grassland. There is a dog walk away from the beach.
There are good pubs and restaurants nearby in Dirleton. There is also a Castle in Dirleton with great gardens. The Castle holds the record for the longest herbaceous flower bed in the World!
Coldingham Bay is a lovely beach. It is around 200 metres wide and is well sheltered by headlands to the north and south with rocky sections at both ends. It offers the best of both worlds with sand for building sandcastles and rocky pools for exploring. The coastal grassland on the beach is a haven for butterflies and there are literally thousands of cliff nesting birds. These can be seen at the nearby St. Abbs Head Nature Reserve.
There is a cafe and plenty of parking.
Portobello Beach, not far from the centre of Edinburgh, is a City beach with 2 miles of golden sand - perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
This award winning beach is very popular and lots of events are held there, including the annual Big Beach Busk, international volleyball competitions and triathlon events.
There are a number of bars and cafes on the promenade and a great Fish and Chip Shop.
Gullane Bents is a extensive sandy beach with great veiws of the Firth of Forth. It is popular for sunbathers, walking, kite flying, picnics, windsurfing and canoeing. There is a crazy golf coure nearby and a motor museum three miles south of the village of Gullane.
The beach itself is within walking distance of the village of Gullane and there is a car park. This is free during the winter months but a charge is made in the summer
