The grounds at Abbotsford have come a long way over the last few years and there are now lots of marked walks. At this time of year it is very peaceful.
Abbotsford Grounds just over a mile with lovely views of the house. Start at the car park and head towards the Visitor Centre then turn right and follow the Borders Abbey Way downhill. Turn left into the field and follow the path across the field towards the riverside. Take the path up the low embankment and follow this across the field heading away from the river.
At the junction with the drive, bear right and go uphill following the drive as it swings round to the right.
At the lodge house go straight ahead through a gate into the wood and continue uphill.
At the road turn left and head downhill (now back on the Borders Abbey Way) then back towards the car park..
River Tweed and Tweedbank is around 3 miles. Again from the car park head downhill on the Borders Abbeys Way. Before the river turn right along a wide track. Walk along the river then under the Redbridge Viaduct and past Lowood Bridge.
Turn right, leaving the Borders Abbeys Way and climb a flight of wooden steps then turn left and follow the road for a few metres.
At the bend in the road turn right and follow the Southern Upland Way along a tarmac path and past a modern office building, which was built to be environmentally-friendly. At the road junction, turn
left, then right, then left again at the sign
for Tweedbank Industrial Estate.
At the cross roads, turn left and when the road bends left, cross the grassy area to join the Solway Woodland trail. Follow this trail through woodland for about half a mile.
Leave the trail by the steps at the gate, cross the road and turn left. At the road about cross the road and go straight ahead through a gate and up the slope back to the car park.
There are lots more walks and you can download a booklet from here or obtain one from the Visitor Centre.
At the Visitor Centre there is a cafe, Ochiltrees, with beautiful views and lovely food. Light lunches and great cakes are on offer daily and dogs are welcome on the balcony.
Airhouses is more than an award-winning holiday escape — it’s an experience you will never forget. Explore woodland walks, hiking trails and the peaceful village of Oxton (plus Edinburgh is less than an hour away). And don’t forget to say hello to our friendly animal family of alpacas, goats, donkeys, pigs, Shetland ponies and more.
