The Scottish Borders and Lothians are steeped in history and culture.

The Scottish Borders & Lothians have played a prominent role in British history, always at the forefront of anglo-Scottish relations, struggles and commerce.  There is evidence of  Iron-Age settlers and civilisations in the Borders, making temples on the Eildons, and later mixing with the Romans who built their huge road Dere Street straight through our county.

This turbulent and important past has left behind an abundance of historical monuments from Roman Forts, Abbeys, and Castles and houses of historically powerful and famous families. The Scottish Borders is esepcially famous for a number of Abbeys each with their own fascintating story to tell.

The Borders and Lothians have a rich cultural heritage the spans from the Hawick Tweed Mills of the past (and present), the rich textile industry in Galashiels, through to the current resurgance in arts and crafts which you can see in the galleries and craft shops through out the area.  The Borders has a proud literary heritage, being home to Sir Walter Scott and now the Borders Book Festival and the prestigious Sir Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.

Food and Drink

Food has always been important here, agriculture has been the backbone of Scottish Borders & Lothian industries for centuries and still plays an important role, from fishing off Eyemouth to berry picking at St Boswells, there is something for everyone! There are also a number of great local Farmer’s Markets.
